Althuber Spornberger & Partner

The boutique tax advisory firm was founded in March 2018 by Franz Althuber from DLA Piper, Martin Spornberger from PwC and Maria Althuber-Griesmayr, from DLA Piper. The three founders and partners lead the tax team. It focuses on advisory and representing companies and senior managers in all tax matters of litigation. Spornberger focuses on advising and representing clients concerning audits and related appeal actions and criminal tax matters before the tax authorities. Althuber-Griesmayr focuses on directors and officers insurance and litigation tax-related liability defence.

The team is advising several foreign companies in tax reclaim proceedings valued at €14 million in total. The cases include complicated questions about Austrian capital tax.

Binder Grösswang

Binder Grösswang offers tax advice in all tax legal areas. Some of the areas they focus on are transactional tax, restructuring, capital market transactions, auditing, tax planning and more. 

Partner Christian Wimpissinger and partner Andreas Hable lead the tax legal practice in Austria. Wimpissinger focuses on international tax, corporate tax, tax planning and accounting law. Hable specialises in tax law and corporate law, specifically advising on cross-border restructuring of large multinational groups and M&A-related tax and corporate aspects. The law firm is strong in international tax law matters such as analysing the BEPS compliance for its large group clients, with a strong focus on private clients or high-net-worth individuals.

Binder Grösswang with Willkie Far & Gallagher and KPMG advised Constantia Flexibles Holding on the carve-out and sale of its global labels division. The transaction was valued at €1.15 billion. Binder Grösswang provided advice on how to structure the deal.

bpv Hügel

bpv Hügel's dedicated tax legal team is led by Gerald Schachner and has more than nine full-time tax lawyers, making it one of the biggest tax firms in its jurisdiction. It offers full tax service and specialises in high-level national and international corporate tax advice regarding niche cross-border transactions. The tax team has vast experience in the following sectors: energy, finance, retail, professional services and real estate. It is a member firm of BPV Legal, a network of independent law firms with 150 lawyers in Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, Prague and Austria. 

The firm advised on the merger of Raiffeisen Zentralbank Österreich and several Raiffeisenlandesbanks valued at $150 million. The law firms gave advice on the transactional structure and produced transactional documentation, analysis and filings with the takeover commission concerning the associates of the Raiffeisenlandesbanks as shareholders.

Deloitte Tax

Deloitte has one of the largest tax practices in Austria in terms of number of practitioners and portfolio. Herbert Kovar heads the department and Michael Weismann leads the international tax and M&A practice. Its tax team are experienced in sectors such as financial services, real estate, life science, energy, media, technology, telecommunications, and more. It has recently opened a new office in upper Austria. 

The team assisted a construction material manufacturer in an acquisition of a competitor valued at $108 million. The big four firm assisted with the due diligence of the acquired firm and after the acquisition advised in the restructuring of the acquired firm in its existing structures.

Ernst & Young

The EMEIA Tax Center at EY is organised as a supranational entity covering the entire Europe, Middle East, India and Africa (EMEIA) region, with its Intercompany Effectiveness and operational transfer pricing practice serving clients’ needs across all jurisdictions.

Led by Oslo-based partner Sveinung Baumann-Larsen, it brings together multi-disciplinary experience and resources focused on IT, accounting, and tax from the entire region in its work. This work covers some of the leading global companies in their respective fields and includes those involved in retail and consumer products, energy and pharmaceuticals, to name but a few.

ICON

ICON tax advisors has 70 employees including three partners and 20 qualified tax advisors. It plans to have seven partners in 2019. ICON specialises in industrial medium-sized firms. Its key tax areas are VAT, which Günther Platzer heads, and international tax, with partner Stefan Bendlinger. Karl Mitterlehner who is the managing partner, focuses on corporate tax and auditing.

TPA Steuerberatung

TPA Steuerberatung is one of the largest tax advisors in Austria with 550 employees in 12 locations. The tax team specialises in real estate, M&A, TP and international tax structuring. The specific areas within indirect tax include international supply chains and chain transactions, in addition to triangulation cases. Its top five sectors experienced in are real estate, the service sector, manufacturing, tourism and banking and finance. It is also a member of Baker Tilly International, a leading network of independent consulting, and business advisory firms. 

Wolf Theiss

Wolf Theiss specialises solely in tax legal. It specialises in the following tax areas: corporate tax, transactional tax, tax planning for private clients, tax litigation and criminal law. It is developing its interest and focus in cryptocurrencies, concerning the taxation of these digital currencies. Partner Niklas Schmidt leads the tax practice. Schmidt focuses on tax issues related to corporate, commercial, M&A and private clients.

Schmidt and Eva Stadler advised T-mobile on its acquisition of UPC Austria valued at €1.9 billion. Wolf Theiss worked with a NautaDutilh in the Netherlands on the matter. Its role included tax due diligence of UPC, a subsidiary of Liberty Global, a large international cable network operator.
