Baker McKenzie

Fred Burke and Thanh Vinh Nguyen are the heads of the tax practice at Baker McKenzie. The team advises clients on international tax planning, local tax planning, tax compliance and controversy, trade/distribution/customs, individual income tax, tax litigation and disputes. It is aligned with industry groups to meet clients’ needs, particularly in customer goods and retail, energy, mining, infrastructure, financial institutions, healthcare, industrial manufacturing and transportation. 

In the past year, the firm helped a client on a general corporate tax matter related to permanent establishment analysis. The team provided analysis and advice on permanent establishment risk regarding the client’s proposed business operations in Vietnam from a legal and practical view. In addition, the firm also advised a client on general corporate tax issue. It was a tax planning in relation to setting up new business in Vietnam.

Deloitte

Thomas McClelland leads the tax practice at Deloitte. Other tax partners include Phan Vu Hoang, Dion Thai, Bui Ngoc Tuan, Bui Tuan Minh, Hanh Dinh and Suresh Kumar. Deloitte provides a wide range of practices, involving M&A, general corporate tax, international tax, indirect tax and tax dispute. The team advises clients on M&A transactions across various industries such as airlines, consumer goods, trading and education. 

In 2017, Deloitte assisted with two M&A transactions regarding the primary products and real estate industries in Vietnam. 

In 2017 and 2018, the firm expanded by hiring one partner, one director, one senior manager, three managers, 15 senior consultants and 24 consultants.

KPMG

Warrick Cleine is the head of the tax department at KPMG. Its tax practice includes international tax, corporate tax, indirect tax, tax dispute, M&A and transfer pricing. The disputes resolution and controversy practice is led by Nguyen Thu Huong. The team deals with tax disputes matters regarding foreign contractor withholding tax, corporate tax incentives and transfer pricing audit and appeals. In 2017, it helped most clients win cases, especially in the petroleum, consumer goods, steel and financial services industries.

The team is helping a client deal with both general corporate tax and indirect tax issues. It provides various services, including tax structuring advisory, licensing, post-licensing and tax compliance. In addition, it also helped a client on general corporate tax and tax controversy matters. The team helped the client obtain an official letter that confirmed the applicable tax incentives.

It hired six associate directors, three managers and two directors in the past year.
