bpv Grigorescu Ştefănică

bpv Grigorescu Ştefănică was established in 2006. The managing partner is Anca Grigorescu. The tax team consists of seven specialists including three are partners - Anca Grigorescu, Alexandru Rusu and Daniel Ştefănică. 

The firm has experience in advising on emerging areas of tax law, including advising domestic corporations regarding the changes to the Fiscal Code and the implementation of new fiscal measures. 

Some of the firm’s notable clients include Google, Intel and DB Schenker.

During the research period the firm advised Herberger, a construction company, on fiscal implications and risks regarding the client's contracts, such as employment contracts, management contracts and services agreements. This included preparing various hypothetical cases for the administrators profit and their fiscal implications.

Deloitte

Big four accounting firm Deloitte has a leading tax team in Romania comprising 147 professionals. The tax practice has four teams covering corporate and international tax, indirect tax, global employer services and transfer pricing. Deloitte Romania has offices in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Timisoara. The tax practice is experienced advising clients in industries such as retail, manufacturing, energy and real estate. Partner Raluca Bontaş leads the tax practice.

During the research period the firm assisted Bulgarian and Romanian subsidiaries of a larger US energy company with cross-border tax advice.

DLA Piper Dinu

DLA Piper Dinu assists clients in all areas of tax; the team is five strong and has expertise advising on structuring projects. 

Partner Tudor Nedelea leads the tax team and has more than 10 years’ experience in international tax. The firm has a particular focus on disputes matters and a specialism in the life sciences and healthcare sectors in particular.

During the research period the firm advised Marriot International on corporate tax matters. The firm carried out an analysis of the legislative provisions in relation to the activities of the client to determine whether tax deduction was due.

EY

The EMEIA Tax Center at EY is organised as a supranational entity covering the entire Europe, Middle East, India and Africa (EMEIA) region, with its Intercompany Effectiveness and operational transfer pricing practice serving clients’ needs across all jurisdictions.

Led by Oslo-based partner Sveinung Baumann-Larsen, it brings together multi-disciplinary experience and resources focused on IT, accounting, and tax from the entire region in its work. This work covers some of the leading global companies in their respective fields and includes those involved in retail and consumer products, energy and pharmaceuticals, to name but a few.

Grant Thornton

Grant Thornton has been operating in Romania since 2010, advising on assurance, tax and outsourcing services. Nadia Oanea heads the tax department and has more than 18 years of experience in local and international tax.  

During the research period Oanea led the tax team advising a client in the tourism industry on the structuring of a cost contribution arrangement for developing an intellectual property right.

Nestor Nestor Diculescu Kingston Petersen

Nestor Nestor Diculescu Kingston Peterson is one of the largest corporate law firms in Romania. The tax practice has 20 tax consultants and lawyers in Bucharest, Timisoara and Cluj-Napoca. This includes economists, lawyers and certified tax advisers. 

The tax team has five partners and Marius Ionescu and Alina Timofti co-head the practice. The frim advises on investment tax advice, transactional tax, restructuring, tax diagnosis, due diligence, compliance, transfer pricing and tax litigation.

Work highlights include assisting a leading sugar producer regarding a full tax audit covering a five years period. This involved addressing complex profit tax, VAT and TP issues flagged by the tax authorities. 

During the research period the firm added Daniel Hadar to its ranks as a tax director.

Niculeasa Law Offices

Niculeasa Law Offices has been providing tax legal services in Romania since 2012. Madalin-Irinel Niculeasa leads the three strong tax team and specialises in tax, regulatory and commercial litigation.

The tax practice offers general tax services and tax litigation advice. The firm focuses on industries such as banking retail, tobacco, real estate, heavy industry and the automotive sector.  

During the research period the firm advised several Romanian companies controlled by Bank of Cyprus Group in a litigation against the tax authorities concerning the VAT applicable to real estate acquired from bad debtors.

Taxhouse

Managing partner Angela Rosca leads the TaxHouse team in Romania. Rosca has 23 years’ experience in local and international tax. There are two partners and three directors in the team.

The firm is a member of a global network with more than 400 tax partners in 40 countries. The firm advises on tax matters related to investment structuring, real estate, M&A, due diligence, VAT, corporate income tax, and capital gains tax compliance.

Key sectors for the firm include banking and financial services, leasing, real estate, consumer goods and services, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, automotive, energy and insurance. 

During the research period the firm advised a large real estate developer in an assessment of the Romanian tax implications concerning the use of bond proceeds in its downstream operations. The tax team had to determine the correct deductible Romanian tax of interest expenses and the withholding tax applicable to interest payments.

TaxWise

Iulia Butnaru, tax partner and the TP focused Lavinia Bartos are the co-founders of TaxWise. Butnaru has worked for PwC Romania, where she gained experience on tax due diligence and tax consulting projects for clients from various industry sectors such as IT, banking, automotive, energy and retail. 

Bartos also has PwC background where she developed and coordinated numerous TP projects for various clients active in different industries.
