Anand Chelliah leads the tax practice at Baker Tilly Monteiro Heng Tax Services. Marcus Tan and Yohan Francis Xavier are two key practitioners. Its clients come from SMEs to Fortune 500 companies such as the Mace Group and Kuwait Petroleum. The team also works with its national and international network as to manage clients’ services effectively.

Foo Meng Huei leads tax practice at Crowe Malaysia. He specialises in corporate income tax, international tax, transfer pricing and M&A. Chong Mun Yew, who provides the VAT and dispute service, is another key professional. The team has more than 110 tax professionals. It provides a wide range of services including corporate income tax, tax disputes and due diligence and indirect tax. Its practice covers various sectors, including real estate, education and healthcare service providers, media, private equity and funds.
The team helped a client on an indirect tax issue by reviewing the appropriate GST treatment and assessing the implications. It also helped a client as a tax adviser on a corporate restructuring exercise.
In 2018, the firm expanded by hiring and promoting several new directors and senior tax professionals in order to strengthen its tax practice.
Sim Kwang Gek leads the tax practice at Deloitte. It is comprised of more than 500 tax professionals. Its practice includes international tax, M&A, private client and indirect taxes. It has a large indirect tax team with a headcount of 30 practitioners. It offers various indirect tax services, including GST, SST, customs dispute resolutions, audit and tax planning. The team is active in the financial services, oil and gas and real estate sectors. The team also focuses on Chinese and Korean clients and has set up a Chinese group and Korean group, led by Tham Lih Jiun and Chee Pei Pei respectively.
The firm expanded during the research period by hiring five managers, seven senior managers and four directors.
Tai Lai Kok is the head of tax department at KPMG. He has more than 25 years of experience in tax compliance and advisory services. The team provides various tax practices including corporate tax compliance, indirect tax services and corporate tax advisory. It also has a strong capability in tax risk management because of local tax authority challenges. It works closely with clients in order to deal with tax matters immediately and meet clients’ needs.
In 2019, the team helped a client on a private client issue. It prepared the net worth analysis in terms of the client’s information. It also liaised with the local authority on the submission of net worth analysis.
Partner Goh Ka Im leads tax practice at firm. Other key practitioners are Anand Raj, Irene Yong and Foong Pui Chi. Its practice includes tax litigation, audit and investigation. It continues to service traditional clients including ExxonMobil, Shell, Atwood, BP-Castrol, Measat and National Instruments. In addition, the tax group also advises clients in the electronics, telecommunications, consumer products and transport industries.
The team recently assisted Saudi Aramco with both transactional and indirect tax matters, including cross-border transactional work, advisory, structuring, negotiations and strategy covering both direct and indirect taxes.
Adeline Wong is the head of the tax department at Wong & Partners. Other key practitioners include Yvonne Beh, Jason Liang, Krystal Ng and Istee Cheah. It is a member firm of Baker McKenzie and has the capability to offer tax service in 47 jurisdictions around the world. It provides a wide range of services such as local and international tax planning, M&A, private banking and wealth management. In addition, the team has a strong capability in tax disputes and litigation. It has the capability to implement and defend the tax structure.
The team is helping a client by reviewing and analysing the proposed global restructuring steps. It is also assisting with multiple stamp duty relief applications for several transactions. Wong leads the team helping a client on a customs issue. In this case, it advises and assists the client on its proposed supply chain structure and proposed service fees.
