DLA Piper's tax practice under the leadership of Michael Lebovitz, has had significant additions to its tax practice in the past year. In addition to Mike Patton, who joined as a transfer pricing partner shortly before last year's edition of World Tax came out, the group has added an associate and finance specialist. Lebovitz is assisting Abu Dhabi Media, a UAE state-owned media company, make a significant investment in VEVO, an on-line music videos site owned by Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group. The complex restructuring resulted from a previous investment in an operating business in the US by a subsidiary of a sovereign wealth fund. Lebovitz is recognised as a leading practitioner in international tax planning, including M&A and joint ventures.

David Colker is advising an Indian IT service company in an IRS audit after officials proposed a significant upward adjustment for tax under transfer pricing and debt/equity rules. The practice was successful in resolving the issue in favour of its client resulting in a minor transfer pricing adjustment being agreed to close the case. The case established a low cost plus amount as the arm's-length profit of the US subsidiary.
