  • Two organisations have offered different perspectives on simplifying the UK tax system in November.
  • Edward Tanenbaum Tola Ozim On September 7, the IRS issued revenue procedure 2010-32, which provides relief to certain foreign eligible entities that made erroneous entity classification elections (check-the-box elections) based on a mistaken understanding of the number of owners as of the effective date of the election.
  • Chinapat Visuttipat In October the Thai government announced that its total income for the 2010 fiscal year (October 2009 – September 2010) reached Bt2 trillion ($69 billion). This is 22.7% over the government prediction. In this regard, the Thai tax authorities (Revenue, Excise, Customs) were able to collect their taxes of $60 million or 20.8% higher than the estimated budget.
  • Peter Dachs The Medium Term Budget Policy Statement of 2010 was presented on October 27 by the minister of finance.
  • Sandy Nicolson will join the Silicon Valley office of KPMG as managing director of its indirect tax practice. Nicolson previously worked as a director at KPMG's international member firm in the UK, advising companies on numerous indirect tax issues, including cross-border VAT rules. He will now be in charge of expanding KPMG's international indirect tax practice on the west coast, and assisting US multinationals working abroad with VAT and other indirect tax issues.
  • Bob van der Made On October 27 2010, the European Commission finally adopted its comprehensive strategic policy paper (communication) on a proposed re-launch of Europe's internal or single market, which is in existence since 1993. The strategy paper is called: "Towards a Single Market Act For a highly competitive social market economy – 50 proposals for improving our work, business and exchanges with one another". The document with formal reference number COM(2010) 608 final/2) forms the Commission's belated response to the Monti report which was presented to Jose Manuel Barroso, the Commission President, in May 2010.

  • Peter McCullough has joined Blake Dawson as a partner in its direct tax practice in Sydney.
  • Antti Lehtimaja has joined Krogerus in Finland as a counsel and new head of the tax law group.
  • Gottfried Breuninger began a four-year term as head of global tax for Allen & Overy, the UK multinational law firm, in November. His deputies are Chris Harrison, who works in London, and Jean Schaffner, a Luxembourg partner. Breuninger will also become managing partner of the firm in Germany at the beginning of next year.
