The tax team at Salans has a sector-centred approach to tax advice. This means the group serves as more than a support group for the firm's other practices.

Head of tax Sandra Hazan represents clients in the luxury products industry. Partners Jean-Luc Cuadrado and Sybille-Salmon-Legagneur focus on pharmaceuticals and real estate respectively.

The group is particularly strong in both audit and transfer pricing work. Last year Cuadrado represented GlaxoSmithKline on the transfer pricing issues concerning a joint venture with Pfizer.

Other work includes tax structuring for Strategic Hotel and Resorts on the acquisition and resale of a hotel and refinancing of a European real estate fund, taking into consideration the new thin-capitalisation rules in France.

Stephan Busch leads a tax team at Salans of around 13 fee earners. The team is very proficient in international tax matters, being able to take advantage of the firm's international network.

This year Busch, Michael Helm, Dirk-Reiner Voss and Jörg Karenfort advised Deutscher Sparkassen und Giroverband, the association of German savings banks, on an optimal tax solution to the€2.3 billion purchase of the 50% of DekaBank that it did not already own.

Other work this year includes tax structuring for the acquisition by a German and foreign-based purchasing consortium of a real estate portfolio from the State of Berlin and advising Continental Aktiengesellschaft on the international aspects of a euro-denominated bond issue with an aggregated value of €3 billion. Other clients include Berliner Wasserbetriebe and Weberbank.

Under tax department leader Lourdes Pérez-Luque at Salans are a further six fee earners. The team has consolidated its reputation for tax work in Spain, acting for both Spanish and multinational companies in media, energy, retail, real estate and pharmaceuticals in particular. The team's work this year has involved advising one of the largest private healthcare providers in Spain on structuring to minimise tax liability in both Spain and internationally. Pérez-Luque also advised an energy company on the tax implications of its supply agreements and balancing and hedging agreements. She is building a good reputation in the Spanish tax market as competitors have noted her presence in the market this year.
