Wolf Theiss is a top corporate law firm that maintains a well-regarded tax team. It is co-led by Niklas Schmidt and Elinore Richardson, who arrived from Canadian firm Borden Ladner Gervais in September 2011. These two oversee four other professionals in the Vienna office.
Schmidt is highly regarded in the market, as one partner commented: "At Wolf Theiss, Niklas Schmidt is excellent." He is highlighted as a leading lawyer on the tax aspects of capital markets, financial products and cross-border structuring matters.
His innovative work has included advising a Kazakh private equity fund on tax qualification matters, as shares in it are held by an Austrian corporation. This structure is valued at more than €1 billion.
Benjamin Twardosz is advising an international airport operator on the potential acquisition of airports worth around $800 million.
Twardosz is also active in disputes; on behalf of an international retailer he is challenging the tax authority's opinion on intra-group interest rates, a contentious transfer pricing matter that could be worth €2 million in interest to the client.
Twardosz is also working for an insurance broker on VAT issues relating to insurance companies.
