Andreas Bauman has joined Wolf Theiss this year from Schönherr. He is mentioned by his competitors for his strength in corporate tax work. Niklas Schmidt is also mentioned for his financial products work.

Wolf Theiss specialises in corporate tax and restructuring. More than half of their fees comes from these areas and all of the team do some form of corporate tax work. The practice has seen a lot of restructuring work this year, but M&A work is beginning to increase again. Benjamin Twardosz is also advises clients on tax disputes.

This year Schmidt and Michaela Klar advised Verny Investitye, a Kazakh private equity fund, on entity classification issues for Austrian tax purposes as well as on the conditions for the international participation exemption.

About 80% of their clients are multinationals or financial institutions. The firm has a large number of clients from Germany, Switzerland, UK and US in particular. The group also works on a lot of structuring involving Eastern Europe, leveraging off the firm's international network.

Wolf Theiss were awarded 'Austria Tax Firm of the Year' at this year's European Tax Awards.

Clegg advised an asset management firm on the sale of a large Bulgarian company. The group deals with a lot of inbound work, especially from Austria, where the practice can benefit from the firm's strength there.

Faludi Wolf Theiss's tax practice is headed by Balázs Békés, who joined in 2009 to launch the tax practice having previously been leader of the international tax group of Deloitte in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Balázs Horváth and Erzsébet Varga have both joined in the last 12 months to increase the number of professionals at the tax practice to three.

The three cover the main areas of business taxation including disputes and litigation, corporate tax, M&A, transfer pricing, restructuring and VAT. Horváth brings with him a lot of experience in transfer pricing and EU law from his time at Deloitte and Lovells, while Varga is particularly experienced in transactional work.

Work this year includes advising Viacom Global on the tax aspects of setting up a worldwide

holding structure through which licences are given to third-country broadcasting companies, and Hewlett Packard on transfer pricing documentation and binding ruling issues. Other clients include ECE Projektmanagement Budapest and Ethanol Europe.

Wolf Theiss's tax practice is viewed by the market as one of the best known out of the law firms. The practice is structured as a service to the banking and capital markets groups and is led by Matija Repolusk.

The most significant deals the practice was involved in last year have involved tax advice in relation to Eurobond issuances by Slovenian banks and also companies such as Telekom Slovenije. These were complicated by the restrictive Slovenian withholding tax regime. The firm contributed to the changes in the law that facilitated these transactions.

The practice advises mostly financial institutions as well as multinationals.
