Mannheimer Swartling's tax department has a strong reputation in several areas of tax. The department's work benefits from the close ties to the firm's strong corporate department, but it also conducts much standalone tax work. Martin Nilsson, the department head, is admired by peers for his work in both corporate tax and M&A matters and is one of the top tax advisers in Sweden. Standout tax matters for the firm this year included advising Stockholm Country Council on their public-private partnership with Swedish Hospital Partners, a Skanska and Innisfree joint venture company. The parties are to develop and operate the New Karolinska Solna University Hospital under an agreement which expires in 2040. Mannheimer's tax team advised on the best structure to use for the project with corporate tax and VAT being particular concerns. Other notable transactions on which the tax team advised include Ford Motor Company's sale of Volvo and its assets to Chinese company Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Since the seller was not resident in Sweden, the firm had to ensure that tax treatment of the sale remained both beneficial and compliant in both Sweden and the US, Ford's country of residence. The firm has a strong banking and finance department and this is complemented by the strength of its tax practice in capital markets and financial products. For those matters, Anne Rutberg has a very good reputation in the market and is considered one of the leading advisers in Sweden. The firm's tax controversy practice is also well regarded by competitors and Peter Nordqvist is recognised as highly capable in this area.
