Uría Menéndez is a 10 lawyer tax practice with offices in Lisbon and Oporto. Head of the department, Filipe Romão, and his team have advised some high profile clients this year. They assisted HSBC regarding the issuance of private debt securities guaranteed by the Republic of Portugal. This was the first issuance of securities guaranteed by the Republic of Portugal. The deal was worth $2.1 million. They also advised Grupo Pestana, Portugal's largest hotel and tourism group, on the acquisition and financing of hotels in Miami and Berlin and financing of a Brazilian operation.

They have advised an impressive list of clients this year including Kodak, Iberdrola and Alcoa. They assisted Banco Santander on the tax implications of the swap by investors of structured bonds issued by Lehman Brothers for bonds or preferred shares issued by the bank. This deal was complex as it had never been done before in the context of Lehman's bankruptcy. They are also advising British Airways on the proposed merger with Iberia Líneas Aereas de España, arguably the most important trans-European M&A on-going public transaction.
