The firm started its activity in 1928, in Lisbon. It opened an office in Oporto in 1989 and an office in Maputo (Mozambique) in 1998. In February 2000, the firm signed with the law firm Cuatrecasas a professional integration agreement. In February 2009, as a result of that integration agreement with Cuatrecasas, the firm changed its name from Goncalves Pereira, Castelo Branco, to Cuatrecasas, Goncalves Pereira; this name was adopted by the firm in Portugal in Spain, and worldwide.
Today, the firm has over 170 lawyers, 24 of whom are partners, and four permanent paralegals, with a total of 245 people working on a permanent and exclusive basis. The firm's activity is concentrated in general corporate and commercial law, contracts, mergers and acquisitions, administrative law and regulatory compliance, banking and finacial law, capital markets, real estate, bankruptcy, EC and competition law, intellectual property, taxation, litigation, labour, aviation, maritime law and information technology.
The firm represents major Portuguese and international companies and its lawyers are fluent in English, French and Spanish.
Tax advisory:
The tax department covers all areas of specialization. The team consists of 13 lawyers who have significant expertise in all aspects of tax law for domestic and international companies, including mergers, acquisitions, buyouts, reorganizations and real estate investments, advising industries, services, insurance companies, banks and financial institutions.
The department's work includes tax planning and tax litigation and the tax team gives advice to corporate and private clients both on domestic and international tax law.
Recent work involves the creation of funds, real estate investments, cross-border leasings, stock options plans, privatizations, structuring of debts, and the structuring of operations in Madeira International Business Centre and Mozambique. Structuring of MBO and LBO's and corporate reorganizations.
