White & Case's tax practice in the Czech Republic is headed by Ales Zídek who is praised by his peers for his international tax work and expertise in the energy sector. Tomás Hlavácek, is the only other partner. He specialises in transaction tax, corporate restructuring work and advice in relation to financial services.

The practice provides a range of business tax advice on topics such as tax structuring for transactions, tax planning, tax administration and negotiations with authorities and tax dispute resolution.

This year Zídek has been advising AVAST Software, a Czech anti-virus software company on the tax implications of its international expansion. This involved a breadth of tax advice ranging from M&A structuring to advice on the tax implications in relation to intellectual property. Other work this year included advising one of Europe's leading providers of consumer finance on its listing on the London Stock Exchange, and advising a major global bank on the structuring of its equity investments in Czech companies through a Singaporean vehicle.

Other clients they have worked for this year include Alta, Arx Equity Partners, Decci, Mid Europa Partners, PPF, Riverside, BP Austria, CEZ and Pegas Nonwovens.

The tax practice of international law firm White & Case in Poland is led by Janusz Fiszer and includes six other tax professionals. Fiszer is a highly respected tax adviser in Poland and is recommended across several areas, but especially in corporate tax, M&A and cross border structuring. Much of the firm's work concerns international tax planning and structuring to optimise and streamline the taxes payable by clients. Marzena Matuszyk-Aubertin splits her time between the firm's Paris and Warsaw offices ensuring continuity of service for Polish clients investing in France and French companies investing in Poland.

The tax department of White & Case has been especially active in M&A and corporate financing this year. Under department head Irina Dmitrieva the team advises multinationals such as Microsoft, Nestlé, BMW and Pfizer and Russian companies including Russian Railway Leasing and pharmaceutical company Sandoz. One of the most technically demanding matters for the firm this year had been its role in advising lime and mineral company Lhoist on its joint venture with listed Russian industrial company TMK. This necessitated a careful use of corporate structures by the team to ensure beneficial tax treatment for the joint venture company and both the participant companies. The practice covers a wide range of tax issues including cross-border structuring, M&A, joint ventures, project finance, both debt and equity capital markets matters. All five members of the department are also capable in tax controversy matters and provide tax opinions.

White & Case's tax practice is led by Marek Staron and comprises three practitioners. The practice is one of the strongest in a law firms in the Slovak Republic and they view their main competitors in the market as the big-four. The practice mostly advises on M&A, cross-border structuring and litigation.

The group has been very busy this year, advising on a number of high-profile deals. Staron, Matej Firicky and Zoran Draskovic advised a Spanish company on the development of two solar power plants in Slovakia, which involved a lot of interesting structuring, including the use of a Cyprus holding company.

The practice also secured a VAT refund for Promens, a manufacturing company, which meant negotiations with the Ministry of Finance on the EU VAT Directive. Other clients include Doprastav, Enterprise Investors, Vectra and Heitman.
