White & Case's tax practice comprises seven fee earners in total and is headed by Norbert Majerholc. Fellow partner Alexandre Ippolito is highlighted for his M&A work.

The tax practice advises across a broad range of business tax areas and is seen as particularly strong in transactional work. This year Majerholc advised a major private equity group on the acquisition of a majority stake in a large French food & beverages company. Ippolito has advised a major pharmaceutical company on its dispute with the authorities which involved France's thin-capitalisation rules.

Ippolito has a particular expertise in advising private equity groups on acquisitions. Majerholc also has a number of clients in the luxury goods, pharmaceuticals and real estate sector. Examples of the practice's clients include Starwood Capital, Suez Environment and Société du Louvre.

The practice provides a good range of tax services including restructuring, M&A, privatisation, bank finance, energy, real estate and dispute resolution. The practice advises frequently in cross-border matters, especially those that involve the US or Asia.

This year Josef Große Honebrink advised Clariant on the $2.9 billion acquisition of a 95% stake in Süd-Chemie. Knebel and Thomas Schmidt also advised Kamor on the development and sale of a major shopping centre project in Frankfurt.

Other clients include DEVK, HSH Nordbank, ZIAG Immobilien and LGT Deutschland.
