Baker & McKenzie's tax team is led by sole partner Imke Gerdes who is a an accountant and a lawyer. She is concerned primarily with M&A and cross-border structuring. The firm has three fee earners including Klaus Link who was hired this year. Baker & McKenzie focuses mainly on optimising tax structuring for the acquisition of companies, reorganisations and tax planning of fund and leasing arrangements. Gerdes represented Bristol-Myers Squibb in the worldwide spin-off of its ConVatec business. This deal was structured as a share deal in some countries and an asset deal in others. It involved around 40 different jurisdictions. The firm also advised a major Italian client in one of the first cross-border mergers in Austria which took the company from Austria to Germany.

One peer said they are "very visible in the market". The group offers advice on all aspects of tax except for compliance. Jerzy Martini is mentioned for VAT. One adviser said: "He has been representing a lot of taxpayers before the ECJ and has won a lot of cases surrounding VAT matters." The team has advised a Polish listed media group with respect to a €400 million ($568 million) acquisition of an international media group with headquarters in Switzerland and main operations in Germany, Austria and Hungary. They have also won several cases before the courts with regard to VAT, corporate income tax and excise duty on behalf of companies from the fuel, fast moving consumer goods, and manufacturing sectors.

Smirnov, alongside Leida Lukianova represented Peter-Service, developers of innovative billing solutions for the telecom sector in Russia, in court with regard to a Tax Inspectorate decision to bring it to account following the field audit of major taxpayers of the city of St. Petersburg. As a result, claims of the Tax Inspectorate for several million roubles were invalidated by the arbitrage court of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.

This transaction marks SAB Miller's entrance into the fast growing Ukrainian beer market. The firm advised Estee Lauder Ukraine and Estee Lauder Lachen on the determination of the customs value of imported products for Estee Lauder Ukraine. The firm managed to achieve a significant reduction in the customs value of imported goods for the client. Voytsitskyi and Tetiana Gryn advised a US owned Swiss company engaged in manufacturing and technology on the restoration of tax returns on corporate profit tax. This was the first transaction of its kind in the Ukrainian market. The firm advised a Saudi Arabian company on structuring its business presence in Ukraine as well as the sale and purchase of grain from Ukraine. The transaction marks the entrance of the client into the Ukrainian market.
