Described by a peer as "very knowledgeable in tax", partner Veerinderjeet Singh leads the team which has six partners and 15 other professionals.
Singh and Renuka Bhupalan teamed up in December 2010 to advise a client on how to use the Malaysian jurisdiction to achieve domestic and global tax efficiency. Advice covered topics such as whether the proposed arrangements gave rise to a permanent establishment exposure and withholding tax, and the use of double tax treaties to minimise such risks. The pair also advised on maximising tax incentives in Malaysia for procurement and trading activities while facilitating tax savings and capitalising on operational efficiencies.
Leow Mui Lee and Vivian New advised a Malaysian subsidiary of a French multinational company on the merger of two businesses and the acquisition of a third. The three businesses were consolidated into an entity that took advantage of substantial tax losses. Lee and New performed a transfer pricing study to optimise the related-party transactions and advised on the necessary steps to be taken to restructure the business. By restructuring, the client was able to capitalise on the tax advantage gained from using the tax losses while ensuring that the arm's length requirement was met.
