BPV Hügel Rechtsanwälte is a strong tax presence in Austria, with head of practice Hans Hügel a highly respected figure. The team has four partners and two other fee earners, and boosted its numbers this year with the hire of Kornelia Wittmann, who joined from PwC in June 2012. The firm itself has a reputation within Austria for its expertise in the energy industry, and counts among its clients names such as Shell, BP and ExxonMobil.
"You get a very good quality at Hügel," says one competitor, while another singles out the group leader: "Hans Hügel is an excellent lawyer."
Hügel has been an ever-present on the firm's standout work this year. He and Gerald Schachner are advising a large industrial group on its organisation, including work on a debt pushdown and transfer pricing strategy. Hügel also advised RWA Raiffeisen Ware, a wholesale and service company for warehouse cooperatives, in May 2012 on establishing a joint venture with Agrana and Wien Energie.
Hügel and Schachner also teamed up to advise Verbund on the transfer pricing issues arising from its sale of a 26% stake in Verbund Innkraftwerke to EVN and Wien Energie, and Schachner advised Nestlé in December 2011 on the VAT implications of a sale of a unit of one of its Austrian businesses.
