Grant Thornton's tax practice is viewed by the market as probably the strongest team in an accounting firm that is not one of the big-four. It is led by Milena Mladenova who is one of four senior managers. She leads a team of 10 practitioners. The practice benefits from a fairly stable team with no recent changes in personnel.
The practice's time is split fairly evenly between support work during audits and consulting work, often sourced from the network. The practice advises across most of the main areas of tax including corporate tax, VAT, and advice on double tax treaties. Demand for VAT services has increased this year, a trend that has been apparent since Bulgaria joined the EU.
This year the group advised a German manufacturer on the operation of a factory in Bulgaria. and a company specialising in sports conferences on expanding their operations into Bulgaria. Most of their clients outside Bulgaria come from Germany, Austria, the UK and Ireland. Important sectors include real estate, financial institutions and retail.

The group comprises eight fee earners and has a good breadth to the tax services it offers. Corporate tax and VAT make up the bulk of their fee income, and the group also has good transfer pricing capabilities, which are overseen by Vendula Tunklová. This year the group advised a Czech subsidiary of an EU-based manufacturing company on various transfer pricing issues and came up with the relevant documentation.
Other work this year includes advising a number of public sector bodies on tax optimisation, particularly to do with VAT, and due diligence for a member of an international hotel chain. The group is well established in the local market, which is where most of their clients come from, though the firm also sources work from the Grant Thornton network, especially from Austria.

The practice is different from the rest of the market because it does not have any domestic clients, only international. The practice is particularly strong in outsourcing work and has also seen an increase in transfer pricing work since the changes to rules in 2009. It advises clients across a broad range of sectors, though is particularly strong in the automotive sector and also financial leasing and information technology.
