Ernst & Young promoted a senior manager to partner this year. The firm remains a strong competitor in the market and boasts a client list that includes many of the largest companies in Argentina, as well as multinationals such as Coca-Cola and McDonalds. In the past 12 months advisers from the tax group have helped Excelerate Energy, a Texas-based importer of liquefied natural gas and Baker Hughes, the global oilfield service company, with consulting matters as well as assisting Techint Group, a group of engineering and construction companies with regional issues. Jorge Gebhardt and Carlos Casanovas are recommended by clients for giving "very reliable opinions" and "always being up to date on new issues and ideas".

Ernst & Young has increased its transfer pricing practice in the Brazilian market, adding important clients and enlarging its market share. The firm excels at assisting clients with international tax matters. Supply chain management is another strength for the tax group. There are 40 people in the transfer pricing and international group at the firm, who provide the biggest multinational companies with first rate advice. The past year has seen the firm assist Brazilian clients with several investments outside of Brazil, as well as large mergers of Brazilian companies that affect their structures offshore. Internal restructurings at the same clients have also keep the group busy, finding ways to simplify structures and maximise clients' tax savings. Litigation is booming for the group.

The tax department at Ernst & Young added two new partners in the last year bringing the total group to150 professionals (40 lawyers and 110 accountants) dedicated to all the different tax specialities including general corporate tax law, international taxes, mining, tax compliance and M&A. The team has expertise in international taxation matters, handling both outbound and inbound transactions. Another strength for the firm is tax controversy, with about 250 tax cases being handled at the time of going to press. This year the group provided training for the Peruvian tax authorities, assisting with a practical approach to audit tactics. The firm also advised several Peruvian companies in outbound transactions, a difficult area where a lack of specific provisions in the domestic income tax rules requires deep interpretation and innovation to attain the desirable outcome.
