Travers Smith's six partner tax team is led by Kathleen Russ who specialises in private equity transactions, an area where both the firm generally and tax department are particularly strong. Clients of the firm's tax department include Phoenix, Bank of Scotland Integrated Finance, 3i, Exponent, and Bridgepoint. Partner Emily Clark specialises in fund formation and in late 2010 coordinated the tax elements of the formation of hedge fund management partnership DG Systematic Trading. The partnership acts as the investment manager of Brevan Howard Systematic Trading Fund. This entailed the establishment of offshore holding vehicles and framework agreements to manage the relationships between the parties involved posing several tax issues that Travers Smith team had to solve in a commercially viable manner. The firm also advised Silverfleet Capital in its acquisition of footwear chain Office. As the transaction was a management buy-out backed by Silverfleet the firm deployed corporate structures in the purchase to streamline the tax treatment of the company in future and ensure that Silverfleet will be able to exit in a tax efficient manner in future.
