Deloitte's tax practice has increased its client base and number of advisers this year. The group developed a new programme around integrated solutions to optimise clients' cash flow in the tax area. This programme resulted in more cross-service line tax offerings and significant client wins. In January, the group's Brussels-based European VAT Compliance Centre won the EU VAT compliance outsourcing work of a Swiss headquartered group active in the manufacturing, distribution and retail of top end luxury brands. The team also advised a medical institution attached to a university on the implementation of R&D incentives after Belgium introduced new R&D credits a couple of years ago. This was a non-typical client for the global employer services team, which traditionally advises large multinational companies. Jeroen Lemmens joined the team this year from Toyota. He is now a transfer pricing director. Andre Claes is highly recommended. He is described as "super in the corporate tax field" by one peer.

The firm is mainly involved in advising multinationals on how to set up Cyprus structures and also works on the follow-up compliance including VAT. Markou advised a Cyprus holding company on foreign tax credits saving the taxpayer $75 million.

Deloitte's tax practice has steadily grown over the past six years and now boasts 60 tax professionals and five partners. The firm represents half of the top 30 Finnish companies. During the past year, eight practitioners have joined the firm, including Jari Ahonen from Ernst & Young. He will be involved in restructurings primarily, but will split his time with Jukka Karjalainen in the firm's transfer pricing department.

Petri Salomaa leads the tax practice and has overseen numerous transactions over the past 12 months including large survey projects focusing on dividend and interest withholding taxes and thin-capitalisation rules in around 70 countries.

The firm was also commissioned by the Finnish Ministry of Employment to prepare a study on supporting and generating growth companies through tax incentives. The firm was asked to present the findings to the Finnish parliament. Partners Outi Ukkola and Lari Hintsanen worked on this report.

This year the team acted for a multinational company in the compression and automation technology field in the preparation of its global transfer pricing policy for multi-currency cash pooling which increased the efficiency of the documentation process for more than 20 countries. Given the absence of any legal and methodological practice, the team developed a new concept to establish the arm's-length interest rates in cash pooling transactions. Achim Roeder is mentioned for transfer pricing. The group as a whole is also praised for its method of working. One adviser said it is not "as aggressive as the other big four firms". Heinz-Klaus Kroppen leads the practice, which consists of 58 partners and more than 800 tax specialists including about 400 certified tax consultants. Conrad Cassar Torregiani, who one client described as being "very on the ball", specialises in international taxation including transfer pricing. Manduca, Torregiani and Chris Curmi advised on a tax efficient platform for the acquisition and subsequent disposal of distressed bank debt. The advice given was implemented by the client and formally endorsed by the local tax authority. The deal was worth €100 million ($143 million). Torregiani and Marc Alden advised on the introduction of a shared brand development and support services centre in order to shift the place of supply of certain services for VAT purposes without impinging on the ability of the Malta entity to claim a tax deduction for the costs associated with those services. The firm obtained written consent from the competent authority in Malta for the technical considerations. The firm advised Expekt.com on avoiding Malta VAT exposure that would have arisen on the acquisition of certain services. The firm's product has developed as the industry standard for iGaming operations established in Malta and has been fundamental in retaining Malta as the preferred EU jurisdiction for iGaming operations. Curmi provided advice on the tax efficient restructuring of operational companies within a specific geographical sector of a multinational company. This deal involved complex restructuring of the client's entire transfer pricing model across five jurisdictions. Stephen Alleway advised on this deal. The firm's indirect tax practice advises on both Swiss VAT and international VAT. The firm also provides advice regarding specialist taxes including insurance premium tax and new green taxes which target energy consumption, CO2 emissions and waste disposal.

Fiona Walkinshaw joined the practice in September 2009 from the law firm of Reynolds Porter Chamberlain to set up a direct tax litigation practice. Seven directors became partners in July 2009. Andrew Martyn, formerly assistant director for financial services transfer pricing at HM Revenue & Customs, joined the practice as a director in March 2009.
