Deloitte's team of 189 practitioners in New York is heavily focused on inbound investment, with roughly 20% of its international tax professionals dedicated to this type of client. Jo Ann Catalano is Northeast international tax practice leader and her group focuses on M&A structuring and compliance, as well as supply chain planning and IP planning as companies focus more on how they can better align their business and tax strategies in the context of their principal and IP companies. John Kennedy focuses on private equity. His practice covers structuring a fund and a subsequent acquisition. After that, Kennedy and his group tend to do most of the tax compliance that relates to the investment for the duration of the holding period. Deloitte has seen significant growth in private equity, asset management and hedge funds. While all other practice areas are organised regionally, Deloitte's transfer pricing practice is a national group, headed by Todd Wolosoff who also became managing partner of Deloitte's global transfer pricing practice in 2012. In his new role, Wolosoff has implemented several key global strategic initiatives, such as the transfer pricing Industries Program focused on bringing deep industry knowledge and expertise to the firm's clients. Based in New York, Robert Plunkett heads the financial services transfer pricing group. In the past year, the firm advised a diversified communications and media company, in one of the few advance pricing agreements (APAs) to have been negotiated in China. The client was facing significant double taxation, in the tens of millions of dollars, on an annual basis. Deloitte was also the first firm to host a financial services roundtable with the Internal Revenue Service and the UK's tax authority, HM Revenues & Customs. The New York practice acquired a new principal with the hiring of Carlos Schmidt in May 2011, and two transfer pricing professionals, with the relocation of Shanto Ghosh from Deloitte India in October 2011 and Bill Yohana from Deloitte Australia in June 2012.
Deloitte is the sole sponsor of the Organisation for International Investment, a leading lobbying group for inbound companies in Washington DC. Global US investment practice leader Robert Stricof testified before a House Ways and Means subcommittee on inbound matters, making Deloitte the only firm represented in the hearings. It was also represented in hearings on outbound matters, along with several other firms.
