Their tax practice, led by Pablo Vera, has 11 partners, one of them – Joseph Courand – based in New York and dedicated to serving Deloitte Chile's clients in North America. Alvaro Mecklenburg, former tax practice leader, heads tax litigation and other subgroups. The firm has been advising a Chilean financial services company that in the past 18 months has diversified its activities through more than 20 acquisitions of small- to mid-sized retailers. They are both active in corporate tax as well, but focus on different industries. Lucas focuses on financial services and agriculture, while Ermoglio concentrates on energy, natural resources, and consumer goods. In March 2012, Deloitte provided a tax analysis of the implications related to the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons, after a Uruguayan oil company started a bidding process for licences. More than 50% of the total area offered was awarded to companies that are new to offshore exploration in Uruguay. Clients choose to work with Deloitte because they are highly satisfied with the services provided and with the professionalism of the team. Gómez is now in charge of both tax and legal after the departure of Humberto Romero-Muci in June 2012. The firm plans to expand its tax, legal, and transfer pricing services for the oil and manufacturing industries, as well as expanding geographically through its Puerto La Cruz office. During the past year, its tax team advised a client on improving their business operations by analysing the entity's effective equity structure and evaluating its results. The matter required the collaboration of various divisions, such as corporate tax, legal, customs and transfer pricing. Iliana Salcedo, who leads the transfer pricing practice, is praised by peers for her expertise in the area.
