Adeline Wong is the only tax partner in the Wong & Partners tax department. She is supported by 10 other tax professionals. The team offers well rounded tax service, including advice on non-contentious tax matters and tax litigation. One rival said the team has been growing stronger in the tax controversy area. "In the past they were quiet in tax litigation and were more on advisory side. But lately, they have been more active and won some cases."
The firm is part of the Baker & McKenzie network, giving them an extensive international outreach to support their MNC clients. Wong, Kae Jeen Wong, and Si Ying Kong represented Cardinal Health in landmark tax litigation that settled the question surrounding interpretation of source of income. The Court of Appeal held that interest income derived by a taxpayer from loans made to an offshore entity is foreign-sourced and therefore not subject to Malaysian income tax.
Wong, Yvonne Beh, and Jason Liang advised Paramit Corporation, a US manufacturer of medical instruments, in their acquisition of a Malaysian manufacturing company. The team advised their client on the post-acquisition tax issues including conducting a transfer pricing review of intercompany agreements. They are further assisting the client in negotiations for prepackaged tax incentives for the manufacture of medical technology in Malaysia.
