Christian Luthman leads the tax practice of Bird & Bird in Sweden which consists of two partners and seven other fee earners, including four new ones. Two practice members joined from the Swedish tax authorities, – one of whom was senior adviser Ulrika Hansson, who is an indirect tax specialist – one from PwC and one from Svalner Skatt & Transaktion. The firm has been active in tax controversy matters this year and successfully represented clients in matters relating to a range of issues including foreign holding structures, compatibility of Swedish tax law with EU law and the carryforward of tax losses. Luthman and Mahmut Baran have also advised several clients on the restructuring of real estate investments and projects to ensure the most tax efficient structure was implemented in each situation. The practice's capital markets tax team has been growing this year and a highlight for the firm was the advice provided to a Swedish bank in relation to structured products. The practice's clients include Swedish food and drink group Heba and property development group Vasallen.
