Having been part of an international alliance with DLA Piper for several years, DLA Phillips Fox fully integrated with the UK-headquartered firm on May 1 2011. The team was strengthened in April 2011 when former BDO adviser James Newnham started in the Melbourne office.

Lead partner Jock McCormack and his team have offered extensive advice to Westpac Bank. Recent examples include tax planning advice related to the new managed investment trust regime on all of the bank's property trusts, and advice surrounding the tax implications of the introduction of a dual currency investment product across Asia.

A significant growth area for the firm has been in tax dispute resolution. The firm has been involved in negotiations with the ATO about a number of large transfer pricing audits, regular audits, strategic reviews, mediation and tax litigation.

DLA Piper has experienced a surge of growth over the last year under the leadership of partners Daniel Chan and Patrice Marceau. The last 12 months have seen the number of professionals in the tax group operating in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai grow from 22 to 35, including a senior lawyer at the firm's China desk in the New York office. Around 75% of the team devote their time exclusively to the Chinese market.

Partner Stephen Nelson joined from King & Wood in January 2011, where he led the tax practice. His addition brings more than 25 years of experience in Chinese corporate, commercial and tax issues, particularly relating to foreign investment into China. Nelson is based in Hong Kong but will spend a significant amount of time in the Beijing office.

Peng Tao heads the China desk in New York, but is due to return to Asia shortly to support Nelson's efforts in growing the Beijing practice.

The firm has used the last year to continue the development and expansion of a wide range of specialised tax practices such as transfer pricing, executive compensation, private banking, and personal tax planning.

Under the leadership of Daniel Chan and Patrice Marceau, DLA Piper's practice has grown in terms of personnel and projects. The number of professionals in the tax group operating in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai grew from 22 to 35 in the last 12 months, and includes a senior lawyer at the firm's China desk in the New York office.

The addition of Stephen Nelson in January 2011 has strengthened the firm's operations in Hong Kong and China. Nelson, previously the head of tax at King & Wood, is based in Hong Kong but will spend a significant amount of time in the Beijing office.
