Corrs Chambers Westgarth's tax group has extensive experience in M&A tax work and dispute resolution, regularly assisting clients through tax audits as well as other regulatory investigations.
Despite the loss of two experienced partners, the firm has had a busy and successful year. Stewart Grieve, previously the tax director of the Foster's Group, joined the firm as a partner in November 2010. He specialises in tax disputes.
Leek and Grieve teamed up with Reynah Tang, Gary Chiert and Craig Milner to advise the Foster's Group on the A$11 billion demerger of their beer and wine businesses. The transaction gave rise to complex structuring issues in relation to partly paid shares. Amendments to the dividend provisions of the Corporations Act mid-transaction added further complexity to the demerger.
Leek also advised Royal Dutch Shell on its block trade of 10% of the shares in Woodside Petroleum. Corrs Chambers Westgarth has been a major provider of tax advice to Shell for four years.
