Allan Blaikie heads Clayton Utz's tax practice that has grown in reputation and market presence over the last 12 months. Special counsel Kulwant Singh-Pangly joined the team in January 2011 from Deloitte, where he was a principal in the corporate and international tax division.
Partner Mark Friezer and senior associate Louisa Wu were Australian tax counsel to the world's largest gold miner, Barrick Gold, on its A$7.1 billion bid to acquire Equinox Minerals. This has been one of the largest M&A transactions in 2011.
The firm has been actively working with the Macquarie Group on a number of matters. Blaikie and international corporate tax partner Kirsten Fish teamed up in November 2010 to advise the group on the tax implications of their issuance of a new US dollar hybrid security to offshore investors.
The team has also been busy working on a number of tax dispute cases over the last year.
