Herbert Smith's tax practice is led by Bradley Phillips and provides services to clients in a full range of tax services. Its ability in Europe is particularly pronounced as a result of its alliance with Gleiss Lutz in Germany and Stibbe in the Netherlands. The firm is particularly distinguished in M&A and tax controversy matters and is well reputed in investment funds, energy, outsourcing, asset management, real estate and corporate restructuring matters. Notable work for the firm this year included the advice provided to energy company EdF for the tax issues arising from its divestment of its distribution company in the UK. As the group is based in France, the team involved had to consider various cross-border tax issues and the tax implications of the transaction in France. The firm also devised a tax efficient structure for the proposed merger between food producers Northern Foods and Greencore, which was later aborted, requiring close attention to cross border structuring due to the international dimensions of both those companies. Neil Warriner has also been active in real estate matters this year. In late 2010, he advised on a £1.8 billion ($2.99 billion) joint venture between Crown Estates and the Norwegian Government Pension Fund that is to run the Crown Estate's Regent Street portfolio. Warriner also advised on the 'cheesegrater' skyscraper development on Leadenhall Street which posed particular issues with VAT.
