Stuart Hutchinson is the sole partner in Simpson Grierson's tax division. He works closely with experienced senior associates Paul Windeatt, Barney Cumberland, and Nicholas Bland to maintain the firm's highly reputed tax practice. The team specialises in corporate and commercial taxation, structuring and tax disputes.
Windeatt is advising Toll Group, a logistics solutions provider, on its appeal against IRD tax assessments. The dispute concerns the company's right to claim interest deductions for an interest-free financial instrument that was imputed to have an interest element under a tax authority determination that was previously in force. The authorities are seeking to use tax avoidance legislation to override its own mandatory determination.
Hutchinson and Windeatt advise Harvard Management Company, owned by Harvard University, on its investments in New Zealand. The company has put a lot of money into the forestry and farming industries. The advice covers a range of tax issues raised by US tax-exempt entities investing in New Zealand.
