Nishimura & Asahi's tax practice is headed by Masakazu Iwakura, Kazuhiro Takei, and Yo Ota. Offering a full range of tax services, the firm has been heavily involved in tax litigation over the last year.
Recommended by peers for his tax controversy work, Akihiro Hironaka teamed up with Yasutaka Nishikori and Ota in May 2010 to help an insurance company contest a $55.9 million tax assessment concerning complex cross-border reinsurance transactions. In the end, the team succeeded in recovering more – $81.8 million – than the assessment for the client.
Ota and Michito Kitamura successfully defended a client in a corporate tax audit. The tax authorities challenged the value of goodwill in an M&A transaction. The pair were able to have the initial tax assessment substantially reduced.
Numerous other cases are due to be resolved one way or another in the coming year.
