Yushi Hegawa leads Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu's efficient tax practice comprising five partners and seven fee earners.
Special counsel Mamoru Toba is a former director general of the Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau. His presence adds strength to the firm, allowing it to maintain close relationships with the tax authorities and regularly exchange views with government officials.
Hegawa advised on several debt offerings in the US and European markets by quasi-governmental issuers including the Japan Finance Corporation, Japanese banks and financial conglomerates, and Dai-ichi Mutual Insurance Company. The application of the new regime from the 2010 tax reform was a key issue in these transactions.
Hegawa is offering tax policy advice concerning a client's tax reform request to enable offshore investors to trade certain tax-free securities in Japan.
The team is also gaining recognition in the market for working with high profile clients on foreign-issued bond deals.
