Formerly known as Mallesons Stephen Jaques, King & Wood Mallesons was formed on March 1 2012 after the combination with Chinese firm King & Wood PRC Lawyers. Justin Cherrington is the leader of the tax team and an income tax specialist. The team's 12 partners are split between the Sydney and Melbourne offices. David Wood is well regarded by his peers for his performance in the M&A space, as is Ken Lord, who is noted for his commercial sense in the capital markets and financial industries.

King & Wood Mallesons is expanding its tax practice and next year expects to see more partners joining its team. The tax team is led by Tony Dong who specialises in Chinese tax and business advisory services.

George Zhao joined the team from Ernst & Young. He practises in all general areas of tax though his strength is in corporate tax, M&A and general business advisory work. The team has been particularly active in M&A in relation to investment structuring, transfer pricing audits and transfer pricing dispute resolution over the last 12 months.

Dong and his team represented a large European chemistry company in negotiations and ultimate settlement of a transfer pricing audit. The team was able to achieve an amicable settlement within two months, whereas the audit had been going on for three years before the team was hired. The tax savings achieved for their client were more than RMB10 million ($1.6 million).

The team maintains a strong relationship with the tax authorities and is often consulted when new tax laws are being discussed. Most recently, they have provided comments relating to the partnership tax rules, the anti-avoidance provisions for cross-border and transfer pricing.
